New Zealand Immigration: Business and Investor Visas
New Zealand offers specific "business" and "investor" visa categories that enable certain foreign investors to obtain a residence visa in the country.
The purpose of these visa categories is to attract financial capital to local businesses or the government by granting visas to those who make a significant contribution to the New Zealand economy. These visa categories have stringent criteria, requiring applicants to meet strict financial conditions.
What Are the Financial Requirements for the "Active Investor Plus" Visa?
The Active Investor Plus visa is designed for investors who wish to actively engage in the New Zealand economy. There are two main categories:
Growth: intended for higher-risk, higher-return investments, such as direct investments in local businesses. It requires a minimum investment of NZD 5 million over three years, with only 21 days of physical presence in New Zealand required.
Balanced: this option includes a diverse range of investments (real estate, bonds, listed shares), with lower-risk alternatives available. It requires a minimum investment of NZD 10 million over five years, with 105 days of presence required in New Zealand.
Additional benefits apply to the Balanced category depending on the amount invested: from NZD 11 million, the required time spent in New Zealand can be reduced to 91, 77, or 63 days.
The Process for Applying for an “Active Investor Plus” Visa
To apply for the Active Investor Plus visa, the first step is to submit your application, which must include comprehensive information about your profile, your funds, and all supporting documents.
Once your application is approved in principle, you have six months to arrange the transfer of funds and invest in an approved New Zealand business.
Following this approval, you can apply for a work visa to come to New Zealand. If your partner wishes to join you, they will need to apply for their own visitor visa. Your dependent children can apply for student visas.
