Q: Can I invest in real estate in New Zealand as a foreign investor?

A: Since 22 October 2018, the purchase of existing residential property has been restricted to New Zealand citizens, as well as citizens of Australia and Singapore, and holders of a New Zealand resident or permanent resident visa.

However, non-resident foreign investors can still invest in newly built developments (off-plan) of more than 20 apartments, for rental purposes only.

Q: I am a New Zealand resident. Can I buy property?

A: Yes, it is entirely possible to purchase property in New Zealand as a resident, provided you meet a few requirements:

  • Hold a residence visa

  • Have lived in New Zealand for at least the past 12 months

  • Have been physically present in New Zealand for at least 183 days in the past 12 months, and

  • Be a New Zealand tax resident.

Q: Can I immigrate to New Zealand through investment?

A: Yes, New Zealand offers several visa categories for investment, notably through the Active Investor Plus programme, designed for individuals wanting to make a significant contribution to the local economy.

Two main options are available:

Growth Category

  • High-yield, higher-risk investments (e.g. direct investments in New Zealand businesses)

  • Minimum investment: NZD 5 million

  • Investment period: 3 years

  • Presence required: 21 days in New Zealand

Balanced Category

  • More diversified investments (real estate allowed, bonds, listed equities, etc.)

  • Minimum investment: NZD 10 million

  • Investment period: 5 years

  • Presence required: 105 days in total
